Water is a problem in so many parts of the world. Whether there is not access to clean water, or the clean water is so far away that it is difficult to get to it. But food is also a problem, one that is often overlooked when people start out helping somewhere less privileged.
On the small Pacific island, Futuna, a part of Vanuatu, the people lived with access to two kinds of food. Boiled fish and boiled cassava. They could send to the main island for more vegetables but the island was so remote that it would take ages for their small boats to get the vegetables and then return with them. Another organization helped teach the people of Futuna to grow home gardens. They taught the people of Futuna about cooking and food storage, bringing about a healthier population.
This inspired me to design something to help them even more. Futuna, as with the rest of Vanuatu, is prone to storms, especially in recent times. Many of these storms inflict great deals of damage, and a home garden would be no match. This is where my G.H.G.C (Greenhouse Garden Cover) comes in. A simple, small, but sturdy structure that will be designed to be easy to put together, and very stable, these G.H.G.C's will help protect Futuna's home gardens from the brutal storms that are commonplace there. With the help of the G.H.G.C, recovering after storms will be a faster, safer process. Running out of stored food after a storm will be less of an issue, because the plants will be alive, producing more food.
